A hospital of the future means more patients, shorter wait times, and better use of bed occupancy – all while meeting growing demands in quality. A critical part of this vision is finding the most modern IT systems possible. This was recognized early on by the planners at the Feldkirch Regional Hospital in Vorarlberg, Austria. By 1995 they had already implemented the Patidok electronic Healthcare Information Management System (HIMS). Integrated in the hospital-wide IT network, Patidok not only serves as a clinical documentation system for patient care, but also as a central information platform for internal and external communication.

The healthcare system has reached an impasse: vanishing government support, escalating costs, aging demographics, and the expense of keeping up with medical progress has forced everyone working in the field to find innovative new ways to improve workflow processes. It is possible to handle administrative tasks and medical/ therapeutic care more efficiently – demonstrated here by Feldkirch Regional Hospital and their leading-edge IT approach.
